Standún is one of Galway’s longest running businesses and a truly unique shopping destination in the beautiful Connemara. This Saturday marked their 70th birthday and they had a spectacular all day celebration to mark the occasion.
You might remember I collaborated with them recently on this Aran Jumper blog post and they were very kind to invite me back to join them on this fun day! I was asked to put together a few outfits for a mini fashion show featuring the iconic Aran Jumper styled various different ways. I got to chat to Ryan Tubridy (who was super sound and made the whole thing so easy) about why I love this garment so much and how it’s making a comeback into contemporary fashion.
I can think of no better way to spend the day than surrounded by great fashion, Irish language, lovely people, music, food, dance and crafts!
I put together 7 different outfits on the day, modeled by the beautiful Mary Lee, Simona and Greg from Catwalk Modelling Agency.
Looking at this I immediately think of Coco Channel or Audrey Hepburn. I love the collar peeking from underneath the jumper and the stylish accessories – so chic!
Now for something a little more casual, this is such a reliable combination for every day wear. Paired with Katie & Me Celtic bangles. I would love this with a pair of heels too!
This burgundy coat combined with an Aran polo neck, got a particularly great reaction from the crowd and I’m not surprised! I also love the cashmere scarf that just ties all the colours together. To me, this is peak AW aesthetic!
I was only featuring one outfit for Greg and I wanted to make sure that it’s my most favourite style! Honestly, I would be happy if my boyfriend wore this every day, the perfect dressy casual look!
The feature would not be complete without an outfit made for the outdoors! The Aran Jumper is ideal for retaining heat and being water resistant. Paired with Aran mittens and cap and Donegal socks, you’re bound to stay toasty on your weekend hike or walk to the woods.
This is my little nod to Celtic heritage. I styled this with a hand knit jumper (which is heavier and thicker than a machine knit) and I put a beautiful shawl over it. I think the Cailin Celtic pin just makes it.
I must say this is probably my most favourite outfit of all! In my mind this was a complete showstopper and wasn’t wrong, I might’ve even heard a few gasps from the audience. It can be worn to any special occasion but I think it is also front row fashion show material. Check out that statement Knight & Day necklace and the pink fur – I can’t even!
To show that Aran knitwear can really be enjoyed by any age, we were joined by the lovely Orla & Hannah. These two girls are cousins and they joined us together to show everyone outfits that they picked and loved. They were so helpful and confident – Orla told me that she would like to be stylist herself one day and I have to admire just how early she’s starting out!
All the outfits are available to buy in store in Standún and you can also shop online.
The day was so busy – so many people came! When Ryan arrived at 2pm he made everyone really excited! He was more than happy to pose for pictures with people and give hugs to everyone.
My slot was on for about 15 minutes but it was so fun and went by so quick! The show was mc-ed by the creative team from Golden Egg Productions who made sure that everything ran smoothly. I also had my dear friend Sinéad helping me (she snapped this pic below too) despite being super busy covering all of Standún’s social media channels!
I would also like to extend a major thank you to Standún sisters Cliona and Laragh as well as all the staff. They were fantastic to deal with and put on a spectacular event!
My own outfit
Ever since I put a copper shade into my hair I really gravitate towards deep colour tones, especially this shade of green. I wanted something stylish but comfortable for the day. This is true to the type of outfit I’ve been wearing all throughout this autumn. I’m wearing a Kelly Craig brooch and Newbridge Silverware bangle, all from Standún.
Entertainment & Demos
I was also able to sneak a peek and the odd picture of everything else that went on throughout the day. There was the Branar Theatre puppet show in the morning as well as colouring and storytelling for the little ones. Then the room filled with lovely smells with cooking demos from Galway Food Company, Connemara Seaweed Company, chefs Jonathan Keane and Evan O’Ceallaigh.
Throughout the shop you could also chat to various suppliers and sample their products. Goodies from Brona Chocolates, Rose & Alice soaps and gifts and a live demo of an Aran knit coming to life, the traditional way. In the afternoon, the floor was lit with various lively music and dance performances.
This was in all honesty one of the best experiences I’ve had this year! A family run establishment like this has the ability to make you feel like you belong and are a part of something special. I imagine that’s why they have so many loyal customers.
Congratulations to the Standún family on this beautiful accomplishment and here’s to many more years of success and happy memories!
